Well I got back from cali at midnight last night. I was supposed to get back at 4:00 but just as I was landing in salt lake all of the sudden the plane takes back off into the sky and we find out that President bush closed down the whole airport so that he could take off. So a quick trip to idaho and then back I missed my flight by an hour and ended up having to wait 7 hours for the next flight to OKC. Anyway I'm glad to b home. Some highlights for me.... Meeting Paul Woolson. What a great guy (who SOO looks younger than he is...maybe it is the earrings) Lots of fun to be around, and he makes kick butt guitars to boot! Steve Miller was at the show and he really liked Pauls guitars! And I was amazed at how big of a difference the side ports made. Paul Davis and family were also awesome. Very generous with their time and money. They let me stay at their house on sunday night cause it was a lot easier trip for me than t drive back to san Francisco in rush hour. We got lost in San Francisco airport, and Michelle, pauls wife, was going nuts trying to find us all the while I just kept strumming my uke and having a good time. I got to be jealous at Tim McKnight cause he was selling too many guitars. Although while he was gone I played a couple of them and they were loud, and big sounding guitars. Good stuff. Had a rep from martin come over play my guitars and ukes and really like em. Got to meet Jay Hostetler from stew mac, and try to schmooze my videos on him. Had fred carslon play my guitars and really like em (as I drooled at his wonderful creations all weekend. Got to talk with Kevin Ryan for a while and he picked on my stuff and was also complimentary. Finally meet rick turner in person. that dude is a bonified star man! And he looks the part. Nice guy, and had some really awesome guitars. Was right next door to Ervin somoygi (really loud guitars) and grit laskin (amazing inlay) and right across from fred carlson (so imaginative!), so I was in kinda overshadowed by some legends, but I got to meet a ton of people and play lots of guitars! Pictures to come... |

Dangit Mayes!!! take that stupid picture of me outta there or I'll tell some story's about you ![]() And never let it be said that Michelle and I are not giving people, we don't talk about it much but there was a time that we lived on food stamps and waited to get government cheese (it's goooooood stuff too). But we have worked hard over the last 20 years and feel like we should share what God has so richly blessed us with. We would have done it for any of the family here on the OLF.. I'm waiting for Woolson to show up, I figure either he got lost on the way, or got in trouble when he got home and is grounded ![]() -Paul- |

Hey John! Excellent photos! Thanks. I was wondering if Fred Carlson was still building his uber-unusual instruments, and you provided the visual answer. I really like his use of photos and text in his display. Who did the nylon-string archtop? Looks interesting. Anybody know anything about Perry and Perry Guitars? Some interesting design there. Actually, John, I'm sorry to increase your work load, but could you ID the builders in the photos? ![]() |

Hey all! I'm alive. (sort of) Very long trip as well. Not Bush wacked but logistically just a long 14 hour trip. My brain is fried and my feet are killing me. Believe it or not, I did not take a single picture. NOT ONE! But I'll tell of my memories. I'll start things off at my booth. .....Well, that's all. Sort of an onging joke that nobody stopped by except to ask what kind of wood "That" was. Speaking of Bob C's sapele. I politely answered the question and they said "hmmm, pretty" and moved along. All of the guys here from the OLF are great, wonderful and neato guys (Mayes and Davis excluded of course). If I got nothing else from the show, I met some great new friends face to face. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE there made fabulous guitars. I don't have a clue how a buyer would even begin to choose what to buy. they must have had a pretty good idea before they came in. Mayes was being quite humble as I'm pretty sure he's the overall winner of the trip. It all happened in the last few hours so not many people know about it. But Tim, we're still not speaking to you. ![]() |

![]() I try not to invade Tim's fun area but I did want to come in here to thank each one of you personally. I admit, I had an awesome time at the festival. Without the friendliness of each of you, I would have been drowning in a mind boggling sea of guitars. Jason, you can forget my name anytime. It's OK. After all, I am not the maker of the guitars and I am certainly not the maker of the wood. I'm "Just Mary." I'm the one who pushes McKnight guitars into the hands of unsuspecting seekers. When my McKnight husband came into the house to tell his McKnight wife that he put a hole in a McKnight guitar, I thought he was off his rocker. I looked for white coats to scurry in. I panicked. I hid the family treasures. I hid the children. I ran to my computer to ask a friend "What would make a man do such a thing?" be it right or wrong, a trend, eternal success story or 'joke,' it is my wifely duty to publically apologize to the man who bought a new drill one day and decided to put holes in every blasted thing he came into contact with. It ended up being ......... (oh, it is gonna kill me to say this......) I guess.............it was............................................... OK. So, to my Ohio hick(ory) partner, Tim, I humbly apologize. No matter what the rest of the world thinks of you, I will still be here doing life as a luthier's wife. (I love you and your holey guitars.) To each and everyone of you who we met in Santa Rosa, from the bottom of my heart I want to thank you. You are the most wonderful bunch of men on earth. Sincerely, the lady who coordinates the woods on Tim's guitars. Just Mary |

Bruce, Just RIGHT click the "x" and select 'show picture'. You have to do this for every 'x' and may have to do it more than once. Great pic's John. Thanks Shane |

Those who are not talking to Tim should know that he is actually suffering enough right now from having sold all those guitars. His seller's remorse will be seen when he raises prices next week. But the horse is already out of the barn. Mary McKnight is clearly the brains behind this operation. And she makes up in good looks for all that Tim lacks. |

Hello folks, Just got back to Australia from the US after Healdsberg, which was where I found out about this forum. I was having a look around this afternoon and noticed John's pics. I was the person with the mandolins and bouzoukis that John took a very nice photo of and couldn't remember who who made them! Healdsberg is an amazing event from someone from the other side of the Pacific, who never gets to see so many great instruments in one place and gets to meet so many inspiring people at the same time. Still recovering from the jet lag and remembering that yesterday afternoon (which was 36 hours ago) I was leaving Frank Ford's shop in Palo Alto and having the excitment of a rush hour on 101. cheers graham |
